Disney World is offering a new service called Genie Plus, a new value-added service to enhance the guests’ experience during their visit.
Disney World has recently introduced a new paid service known as Genie Plus that is an extension of the free Genie service in the My Disney Experience app. Genie Plus enables guests to enter the Lightning Lanes of specific attractions within the parks for an additional per-ride charge. So how much does Genie Plus cost and what do you get for the price? Here are some of the important facts about Disney World’s new standby service that allows visitors to bypass the line.
Introducing Genie Plus
To start with, one needs to differentiate between the basic Genie and the Genie Plus option, which is a paid one. The Genie service is free for all, including those who have purchased tickets to the park and those who are staying at Disney resorts. This lets you build a custom schedule complete with dining, attractions, entertainment and everything in between.
Genie Plus serves as an extension of this core service, getting visitors to pay an additional amount of money for direct entry into the Lightning Lane for selected attractions. These Lightning Lanes can be considered as an extension of more or less the FastPass line where you pay for a shorter wait.
Currently, Genie Plus is available for a day, which means you have to pay the fee if you want to use the Lightning Lanes on a particular day. Disney still has not released an opportunity to purchase Genie plus for the entire length of a vacation. yet.
One question that has been asked time and time again is Genie Plus Cost?
Well, what is the price for Genie Plus at Disney World at the moment? Here is a breakdown of the Genie Plus price:Here is a breakdown of the Genie Plus price:
$15 per day per guest at Disney World
Therefore, if a family of four, for example, is going to the Magic Kingdom for just one day, it would cost $60 to add Genie Plus to everyone’s ticket.
The factors such as park admission and hotel stay does not affect the Genie Plus price. No matter how long you will be there, whether it is just one day or you’re on the Disney property for a week it is $15 per person per day. It may be noted that tax is already factored into that price.
What that $15 fee includes is the Genie Plus service plus Lightning Lane access for the entire day at the park. Still, there are some attractions not covered and for which you will need to buy an a la carte Lightning Lane ticket, which we will discuss further down below.
What New Service Did Disney introduce and why?
It can be seen that the Disneyland California, specifically Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios resorts have attracted massive crowds in the post COVID world. This overcrowding also saw the average wait time for the major attraction rides like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Rise of the Resistance, and so on, going up to 3+ hours standby.
The Genie Plus system provides Disney an opportunity to persuade guests to visit the park during low demand through cheaper rates or discounts on specific days. It also enables them to produce massive incremental sales. With Genie Plus at $15 per ticket, even if 25% of guests buy it, it could average possibly over $15 million a month across Disney World.
The target customers are more receptive to spending their money on convenience, time and any form of options while on holidays. Thus, it becomes easier to understand the rationale behind the upcharge on the side of Disney as well. It is for the same reason that I believe the perception that it is ‘worth it ‘will to a large extent depend on the personal finances of the visitor.
Genie Plus: What Is Offered?
That $15 per person Genie Plus fee essentially gives you Lightning Lane access to more than 15 attractions across each of the Disney World parks. For instance, at Hollywood studios, it offers attractions such as Toy Story Mania, Rock N Roller Coaster, and Twilight Zone Tower of terror.
However, top-tier headliners like Star Wars: Making it possible to skip the regular line for Rise of the Resistance and the runaway hit Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will cost extra, a Lightning Lane pass. They do not offer free Lightning Lanes even with the Genie Plus. More on that momentarily.
Using your smartphone, the Lightning Lane ride times are booked in a way that is very similar to the old FastPass and FastPass+ systems. A first pass can be booked early in the morning, and another one after you have used the first one or waited until a few hours have passed, whichever comes first.
Another advantage which Disney appears to be pushing is the fact that this can be done on the same day you intend to visit. No more advance FastPass planning – you can choose what would be the most helpful Lightning Lane attraction on the spot after approaching the park and evaluating the crowd.
Individual Lightning Lane Passes
In addition to the full roster of Genie Plus Lightning Lane attractions, Disney now offers individual Lightning Lane passes for purchase for two ultra-popular rides that are not part of Genie Plus:In addition to the full roster of Genie Plus Lightning Lane attractions, Disney now offers individual Lightning Lane passes for purchase for two ultra-popular rides that are not part of Genie Plus:
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in Epcot Star Wars: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios
These ‘a la carte’ Lightning Lanes unlock priority access to these popular attractions that have 120+ minute wait times on average. Here are the costs:
Remy's Ratatouille Adventure Lightning Lane: $11 per person per ride Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Lightning Lane: $17 per person per ride.
This means a family of four could spend $44 to get to the FastPass-style line at Ratatouille in Epcot or $68 to bypass the long standby line at Rise of the Resistance. These fees are on top of Genie Plus which costs $15 per person if you have it as well.
It is necessary to stress that the park hopper admission is necessary to buy a la carte Lightning Lanes and to make individual purchases, to be more precise, an individual guest should have entered a park of his choice for the day at least. Therefore, do not buy these add-ons before getting your hoppers and being half way through your vacation.
Is it worth getting a Genie Plus Membership?
Whether or not Genie Plus is ‘worth it’ depends on each person’s pocket, preference and how much they can endure the queues.
It can surely be worth it especially when you are in Disney World during holidays and summer holidays when queues stretch higher than normal. More guests being able to use Lightning Lane attractions such as Frozen Ever After, Space Mountain, Jungle Cruise and more could mean cutting down waiting times by hours in a day.
During less crowded days or in the morning when fewer people are present, the standby wait is usually not so long, so the Genie Plus becomes less of a need. It can also affect the value if you’re using the Lightning Lane because ride breakdowns are problematic.
If prioritizing and riding lots of headliners is more valuable to your family than the money saved, Genie Plus offers an easier way to do that. But if saving money is a key factor, you probably would not spend your money on it and look for smart standby touring tactics.
How much is Genie Plus worth in comparison with FastPass or MaxPass? It is undeniably costlier at $15 per person per day in comparison with the FastPass service that was formerly offered for free. However, it is cheaper than the MaxPass at Disneyland which is $20 per person per day. Over the next few months actual guest feedback in the form of surveys and reviews will determine if visitors feel they are getting enough value for their money when using the Genie Plus service.
