Why Is DirecTV Being Phased Out?
Recently there are doubts whether DirecTV, the second largest satellite television service provider in America, is gradually being phased out in favor of ATandT streaming services. There have been speculations suggesting that ATandT may one day abandon DirecTV in order to prioritize ATandT TV and HBO Max. Nevertheless, ATandT has dismissed such allegations. So what are the realities of the future of DirecTV?
The Source of the DirecTV Phase-Out Rumors
The clock was first started ticking in 2019 when AT&T acquired TimeWarner which, at that point in time, was DirecTV’s parent company before it was acquired. These have made ATandT own both a large satellite television service provider and WarnerMedia’s portfolio of streaming entertainment includes HBO. Such expectations stirred rumors that ATandT would seek to integrate DirecTV into its WarnerMedia entertainment divisions.
They amplified when in 2020 and 2021, ATandT resuscitated WarnerMedia restructuring and changes of the executive employees in preparation towards HBO Max, their streaming platform. On the other hand, DirecTV suffered a myriad of subscribers and lost more than 6 million subscribers between 2015 and 2021. It looked like DirecTV might be on the chopping block with declining subscribers and the focus turning to streaming.
ATandT Dismisses Speculations on Shuttering DirecTV
However, executives at ATandT have continued to dismiss the notion that DirecTV will be disappearing in the near future. Thus, addressing the concerns that ATandT has had regarding DirecTV in the past, ATandT CEO in 2021 John Stankey was clear, saying, “DirecTV is not getting shut down” and noting that the service continues to have its part to play. Stankey did not deny that customers are moving to streaming services for content consumption but pointed out that DirecTV still has market segments such as rural customers who do not have stable broadband connections for streaming.
Similarly, the head of WarnerMedia which is owned by ATandT, Jason Kilar came out to refute any claims that they are planning to eliminate the satellite service. However, in 2021, Kilar said in an interview, “I do not have any plans to shut down DirecTV. ” Despite such speculation among the industry observers, ATandT executives remain adamant that they plan to keep investing in the DirecTV satellite television service alongside the WarnerMedia’s HBO Max streaming services.
How does the Future look for DirecTV?
Despite ATandT seemingly planning to keep DirecTV in its portfolio for the time being, what does the future hold for the satellite television service as streaming television options continue to gain traction? Here are a few possibilities:Here are a few possibilities:
Continued Subscriber Losses: ATandT’s plan is to maintain the functionality of DirecTV However, it is doubtful that the service will cease to lose subscribers every year, given the fact that more homes are adopting streaming services. This means that though still in the market, DirecTV’s customer base can dramatically reduce in size.
More Niche Marketing: Yet as AT&T CEO Stankey pointed out, DirecTV still has some distinctive strengths in specific circumstances such as for rural consumers who have low bandwidth internet option. I expect ATandT to shift target marketing communications towards these specific applications.
Eventual Shutdown or Sale: While ATandT has stated that it has no plans to shutter DirecTV any time soon, the idea of a shutdown or sale cannot be entirely dismissed in the long-term. Subscribers could decline to unsustainable levels. Or a big company such as Dish Network could buy out DirecTV.
Greater Bundling w/Streaming: For the long term, to attract more customers, DirecTV might be bundled with ATandT cheaper trials or subscriptions to HBO Max. This bundling could be useful in maintaining some customer fractions, which is especially important when the company is targeting different consumer groups.
More Emphasis on Streaming: In any case, the streaming services of ATandT will surely receive superior priority in terms of investment and promotional emphasis. They will be ATandT ‘s future relying on HBO Max and ATandT TV, either respectively.
Although DirecTV continues to boast of having close to 15 million users, the good old days whereby satellite services ruled the TV market are but a thing of the past. As the increase in the streaming market does not seem to be declining anytime soon, ATandT appears to be preparing for a future of entertainment based on streaming regardless of what will be done with DirecTV. The service appears poised to gradually transition over the course of the next decade to the streaming platforms of HBO Max and ATandT TV and other rivals like YouTube TV.
