The DIRECTV Genie is the premier HD DVR receiver that is available to consumers who subscribe to DIRECTV services. It lets you record up to 5 different programs simultaneously while watching a sixth program that has already been recorded. The Genie also has such features as Recommended for You and Remote Record which are based on the programs you are likely to record or watch. To setup and operate the Genie receiver, there is a need to input several numeric codes with the help of the remote control.
Upon initializing your Genie, you will go through an installation process that links and sets up the Genie to your DIRECTV account. Most of the settings and navigation changes can be made after the initial installation using the remote and menus displayed on the screen. But there are heaps of other Genie receiver codes that would enable you to get to some other options or menu that cannot be done otherwise. These codes can be used in addressing a problem, in configuring settings that are not easily accessible in the menus, resetting the receiver, conducting system tests, etc.

Display System Info Menu
The system info menu gives detailed information about your receiver which include tuner/antenna signal, network configuration, hard disk drive info, software version etc. To get to it you press 0 2 4 6 8 on your Genie remote control.
This code is helpful whenever you require numbers from your receiver for instance when analyzing picture quality problems. It also provides important software details which you might require while communicating with the DIRECTV customer care department.
Display External Test Menu
If you are a technician or one who wants to test connections with other set-top boxes, you can press 0 6 1 1 to show the external device test. There are options in this area to send test signals or commands to other devices connected to the Genie such as Genie Minis or a wireless video bridge.
It can be used to check whether another device is interacting with the Genie or to confirm network connectivity before proceeding with the installation of other DIRECTV equipment.
Run System Test
If you ever encounter a general problem with your Genie receiver or any connection issues, performing a system test provides a thorough report on the functions of the hard drive, network adapter, remote, tuners, and memory. To begin this test, key in 0 6 1 2.

Here you can effectively set the parental rating, to enable the channel block, to filter the names of programs that contain specific words, to set the time for the TV and much more. The option to select the parental menu is disabled and requires the appropriate passcode for the menu to be unlocked.
Restart Receiver
Performance problems that present themselves in form of slow or frozen issues can be solved in the short-term by rebooting the Genie receiver. This is done using master reset code 2 0 2 which locks the system off and then restarts it immediately.
Remember that when you restart, you lose all the recordings that occurred while it was restarting. You also have to wait for several additional minutes for the receiver to start rebooting before it becomes operational again.
